The Economic and Social Council Chamber at U.N. Headquarters
Caption Description
The Economic and Social Council chamber at United Nations permanent Headquarters, as seen from the area (foreground) reserved for the public. Immediately following the public area is the section reserved for the Press and, in the background, the horse-shoe shaped table for delegates.
The chamber was designed by a Swedish architect, Mr. Sven Markelius, and the government of Sweden contributed a fund of 140,000 Swedish crowns (approximately US$27.000) toward the cost of decorating it. Besides the representatives, their advisers and the conference staff, the chamber accommodates 400 members of the public and 120 press correspondents. It is about 50 meters long, 25 meters wide and 9 meters high. [No exact date]
