Caption Description
At a ceremony held in Paris today, President F.W. de Klerk of South Africa and Nelson Mandela, President of the African National Congress (ANC), were jointly awarded the Felix Houphouet-Boigny UNESCO Prize for Peace Research. The prize was created in 1989 by UNESCO to recognize actions by persons, institutions or associations who have contributed in a significant manner to the promotion, research, safeguarding or maintenance of peace in the spirit of the UNESCO Constitution and the United Nations Charter. Each received a cheque for Ff. 400,000, a gold medal and a UNESCO Peace Diploma.
