Petra, Jordan
Caption Description
The landlocked Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has frontiers with Iraq, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Israel. It is inhabited by about two million people which includes 600,000 Palestine refugees. It is an arid country with little surface water, infertile soil and few exploitable resources. Almost the entire eastern half is desert, partly covered by salt or lava. Jordan, historians say, has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was part of the land of the ancient Hebrews. Petra is an old Nabataean city which became a Roman province about 100 years before Christ. It was to be later bypassed by caravan routes and "disappeared" for 500 years. The Swiss explorer Burckhardt rediscovered it in 1812.
The building seen through the defile is the remains of "the treasury" building. [November 1969]
