Sir Egerton Richardson, Permanent Representative of Jamaica to the UN, today signed at UN Headquarters the Constitution of the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The Constitution, which will make UNIDO the world body's sixteenth specialized agency, is open for signature at the United Nations. Adopted by consensus on 8 April 1979 in Vienna by a Conference of plenipotentiaries, the UNIDO Constitution will enter into force when at least, 80 States that have deposited instruments of ratification, acceptance or approval have agreed that it should do so. The primary objective of the organization shall be the promotion of industrial development in the developing countries. Looking on is Erik Suy, Under-Secretary-General for Legal. Affairs.
