Nelson Mandela, Deputy President of the African National Congress of South Africa, raises his fist in the air while addressing the Special Committee Against Apartheid in the General Assembly Hall.
Apartheid consists of hundreds of laws that allow the ruling white minority in South Africa to segregate, exploit and terrorize the vast majority: Africans, mostly, but also Asians and Coloureds - people of mixed race. Under Apartheid, racist beliefs are enshrined in law and any criticism of the law is cruelly suppressed.

Headline Council Meets to Consider Relationship Between UN and South Africa
Caption Description The Security Council this afternoon began consideration of the relationship between the United Nations and South Africa.  On 30 September, the General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on the Council to review that relationship"" in the light of the constant violation by South Africa of the principles of the Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights"".  Statements in the debate on this question were made this afternoon by Omar Arteh Chalib, Foreign Minister of Somalia; by Desmond Luke, Foreign Minister of Sierra Leone; and by Rachid Driss (Tunisia), representing the African Group at the United Nations.  The Council agreed without objection to a request by Mauritania that the Council give a hearing to David Sibeko, member of the Executive Committee of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania, under rule 39 of the Council’s rules of procedure.
