Secretary-General Dedicates Bronze Bust of U Thant at the United Nations International School
Caption Description
A bronze bust of U Thant, former Secretary-General, sculptured by the noted artist, Domenico Mazzone, was unveiled by Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim at the UN International School building today. U Thant was Secretary-General for 10 years and had a deep interest in the School, contributing his efforts to making it an exemplary educational institution. The sculptor, Mr. Mazzone, is a well known portraitist and sculptor from Bari, Italy, now residing New Jersey. One of his recent works was the bas-relief of Dag Hammarskjold which he presented to the Landmarks Preservation Committee of the Southest Museum on UN Day 1973. He has done work in bronze, marble, silver, wood and stone and had created art works for the White House in Washington, for Terence Cardinal Cooks, John A. Volpe and other noted figures. The bronze bust of U Thant will be on permanent exhibit at the UN International School as a Symbol of its deep affection for and gratitude to the former Secretary-General.
The artist, Domenico Mazzone, acknowledges the applause, as he is being introduced at the unveiling ceremony. Seated, from left: Mr. Waldheim and Mr. and Mrs. Tyn Myint U (U Thant's daughter and her husband).
