Headline General Assembly Decides to Suspend South Africa from Participation in Its Work
Caption Description The UN General Assembly this evening decided to suspend South Africa from participation in its work. The decision upheld a ruling by the Assembly's President to the effect that the Assembly's refusal on 30 September to accept the credentials of the South African delegation was a refusal to have that delegation participate in its work.  This decision leaves open the question of South Africa's status as a Member State of the UN.  Only the Security Council can make a recommendation on that matter.  A resolution before the Council recommending South Africa's expulsion from the Organization was vetoed on 30 October.  The President's ruling in the Assembly today was requested by the United Republic of Tanzania.  It was put to the vote after being challenged by the United States.  South Africa did not participate.  91 nations voted in favour, 22 voted against and 19 abstained.
