Assembly Calls on United Kingdom not to Grant Independence to Southern Rhodesia Unless Conditions Are Met, Assembly Also Ends Its General Debate
Caption Description
The General Assembly this afternoon adopted a resolution calling on the United Kingdom not to grant independence to Southern Rhodesia, and on all States not to recognize any form of independence in that country, without the prior establishment of stipulated conditions of government. The Assembly also ended its general debated and decided -- on the basis of a designation by the President of the Assembly — to appoint Ecuador to fill a vacancy on the Special Committee of 24 on the ending of colonialism. Statements in the general debate were made by the representative of Mauritius, the Foreign Ministers of Algeria and Congo (Brazzaville) and the representative of the Central African Republic. The representatives of Portugal, the Philippines and Malaysia spoke in exercise of their rights of reply.
Pierre Girald Guy Balancy (Mauritius) is seen addressing the Assembly. At the presidential rostrum are Secretary-General U Thant (left), and Acting President, Sir John Carter (Guyana), a Vice-President of the Assembly.
