Secretary-General U Thant left New york on 28 January, on an official trip to nine African Countries - Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Senegal, Guinea, Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Congo (Leopoldville). On 6 February, during his visit to Tunisia, the Secretary-General interrupted his tour in Africa and returned to New York.

The General Assembly voted late today to authorize the United Nations to carry out the tasks entrusted to it in the Agreement between Indonesia and the Netherlands concerning West New Guinea (West Irian).

The General Assembly this afternoon unanimously appointed Ambassador U Thant as Acting Secretary-General of the United Nations for a term of office extending until 10 April 1963. The action of the Assembly was taken on a draft resolution sponsored by Ceylon, Liberia and the United Arab Republic. The result of the secret ballot was 103 in favour to none against, with no abstentions.
The installation ceremony took place on the dais of the Assembly Hall shortly after the result of the voting was announced. Representatives gave the appointee a standing ovation as he proceeded to the dais to take the oath of office. Here, U Thant (left) is seen just before he was sworn-in by General Assembly President Mongi Slim (right), of Tunisia.  On the dais with them are the Vice-Presidents (13) of the Assembly, the Chairmen of the Assembly’s Seven Main Committees and the Presidents of the three Councils.

Caption Description Chijoji Nakagawa, former Mayor of Uwajima City, Japan, visited United Nations Headquarters today and presented Secretary-General U Thant with a personal gift of a small bronze replica of the Japanese peace bell which stands in front of United Nations Headquarters. The large bell had been cast from coins collected by Japanese school school in a plan originated and organized by Mr. Nakagawa.
Here, Secretary-General U Thant is seen accepting the gift from Mr. Chijoiji Nakagawa. In accepting the gift the Secretary-General said he would strike the small bell at home every morning.
