Adequate systems of transport and communications are therefore vital, not just for the movement of goods but also of people. Tourism has in fact become a key factor in the economic development of many countries. Its social as well as economic value on both the domestic and international levels is growing every year.

Workers laying a new railway line near Belo Horizonte. With a loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) Mineracoes Brasileiras Reunidas, S.A. (MBR), owners of the Aguas Claras iron ore mine near Belo Horizonte, is constructing this line to connect the mine with the main line between Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro, and then on to Sepetiba Bay.
