Headline Development of Resources: North Sea Oil Exploration
Caption Description Assembled at the deep, sheltered harbour at Stavanger, the mammoth Condeep (Concrete Deep Water Structure) platform, weighing 348,000 dwt, reaching the narrows of Stavanger fjord while being towed to its 253-mile destination in the Brent field, in British waters. In the structure, 19 hollow cylinders of reinforced concrete, each 65 feet in diameter and 185 ft. high, are grouped to form a hexagonal base. Three of these cells extend upward for another 345 feet to form the concrete pillars on which the production deck is installed. The foundation cells serve as tanks to hold water ballast and provide storage capacity for up to a million barrels of oil. Tankers brought the first North Sea oil in 1971, and by the 1980s the North Sea fields are expected to produce between 2.5 and 3 million barrels a day.
