Farming for Development: Animal Disease Control Programme
Caption Description
For some time to come the poorer countries of the world will have to rely on agriculture to raise their living standards and supply the capital they need to create industries. Agricultural production must therefore be increased. This requires tractors, fertilizers, new and better seeds, vast irrigation schemes, land reforms.
A sheep being vaccinated against sheep-pox at Khakrez. About two-thirds of the population of Afghanistan is engaged in some form of livestock raising. In rural areas the mortality rate of animals due to diseases is as high as 30%. In an effort to prevent livestock from contacting diseases such as liver fluke, contagious caprine pleuropneumonia, sheep and goat pox, anthrax, enterotoxaemia and lung worms, the Government has established an animal health clinic at Kandahar with help from the Food and Agriculture Organization under the UN Development Programme.
