Surinam became the 144th Member State of the UN this afternoon when the General Assembly agreed without a vote to the admission of the South American nation. Suriname was the sixth recently independent State to be admitted to the UN this year, the others being Cape Verde, Sâo Tomé and Príncipe, Mozambique, Papua New Guinea and the Comoros. Following the decision of the Assembly, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, Peter Kooijmans, gave a warm welcome to Surinam as the newest Member State and a former colony of the Netherlands.
