Farming for Development: Construction of Aswan High Dam
Caption Description
For some time to come the poorer countries of the world will have to rely on agriculture to raise their living standards and supply the capital they need to create industries. Agricultural production must therefore be increased. This requires tractors, fertilizers, new and better seeds, vast irrigation schemes, land reforms.
Aswan High Dam being constructed in Egypt. The construction of the Aswan High Dam necessitated the resettlement of about 50,000 Nubians (17,000 families) whose homes and lands were to be flooded. Since June 1964 the Nubians have been resettled in the area of Komo Ombo (Aswan district) where 33 new villages with 17,000 houses have been built, and 14,700 hectares of land have been reclaimed and distributed. World Food Programme supplies of food and feed tided the settlers, their families and their livestock over the initial period until their own feed and food crops could be harvested. [April, 1968]
