Fourth Committee Continues Hearing of Petitioners on South West Africa
Caption Description
The Fourth Committee (Trust and Non-Self-Governing Territories) this afternoon continued hearing petitioners on the question of South West Africa. The petitioners heard were Jacob Kuhangua, Secretary-General of the South West Africa People Organization (SWAPO), and Reverend Michael Scott, of the International League for the Rights of Man. Earlier the Chairman, George Tomeh (Syria), drew attention to a cable which he had received from the President of SWAPO, stating that one of 37 South West African prisoners, now facing trial in Pretoria, had died of torture; intervention by the UN was imperative to save the lives of the remaining 36, the cable said.
Jacob Kuhangua, Secretary-General of the South West Africa People Organization (SWAPO), is seen addressing the Committee. At centre is Nathaniel Mbaeva of the South West Africa National United Front (SWANUF), and at left is Mburumba Kerina of SWANUF. At the table in the background are (from left): I.S. Djermakoye, Under-Secretary for Trusteeship and Non-Self-Governing Territories. George Tomeh (Syria), Chairman of the Committee, and M.E. Chacko, Committee Secretary.
