UN Language Laboratory
Caption Description
The UN Language Laboratory was expanded in 1965 to its present 18-booth capacity. Nearly 700 reels of tape are catalogued in the Laboratory, in three dozen languages. Tapes are in English, French, Russian, Spanish and Chinese (the five official languages of the UN) are used largely in conjunction with the UN language classes; but there are also tapes in these languages which may be used by those not attending classes, such as tapes of short stories and plays. The Laboratory is open to UN staff and members of delegations.
Mr. J. Andrews is seen here operating the console in the UN Language Laboratory which controls the playing of tapes, as trainees listen with earphones in the booths.
