Industrialization Programme in Singapore
Caption Description
With the assistance of the United Nations, the UN Development Programme (UNDP), and the International Labour Organization (ILO), and based on recommendations by a UN team of experts in 1961, Singapore has embarked on intensive industrialization to support its fast-expanding population. The main focus has been on the Jurong Industrial Estate, as part of a general development plan. The Jurong project is a 17,000 acre industrial estate on which there are now 70 factories, employing 10,000 workers.
Malaysia Associated Industry Ltd. at Jurong manufactures a wide variety of light engineering equipment. The firm is training 50 students to become skilled workers as tool and die makers, machine operators, electro-platers and welders. I.F. Tang (left)(China), UNDP-Deputy Director of EDB, and B.S. Soon (right), Managing Director of the firm, discuss the training programme. [Exact date unknown]
