2024 marks the 30th observance of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, one of the darkest chapters in human history. More than one million people – overwhelmingly Tutsi, but also Hutu and others who opposed the genocide – were systematically killed in less than three months.

Sheep graze on the lawn of the Palais des Nations, the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, as part of an environmentally-friendly tradition held every year in October and November. The sheep's grazing allows for the lawn to be naturally cut and for other organic maintenance work to be done.

Headline Human Settlements - the Places Where People Live and Work
Caption Description One of the main purposes of the UN Conference-Exposition on Human Settlements to be held in Vancouver, Canada, in June 1976, will be to bring to the world's attention the nature and relative importance of the problems of human settlements against a background of widespread concern for the whole of our earthly environment - natural and man-made. Two of the most critical problems of society today - made increasingly urgent by the rapid rise in the world's population - are the shortage of adequate housing and the deterioration of the conditions under which people live and work. Many cities, particularly in the poorer countries of the world, are unable to provide adequate housing, food, sanitation, work and other essential services for all the people flocking to them in search of a better life. Rural settlements are being abandoned and neglected. Urbanization is not an evil in itself. The process can be guided and converted into a positive factor in development. Economic development and an improvement in the quality of human life need not be competing alternatives. They are both vital and in the common interest of all mankind. The UN Vancouver Conference will endeavour to stimulate thinking along those lines.
Harvesting totora reeds on the Peruvian shores of Lake Titicaca. There is no wood in this area where the Urus Indians have lived for centuries. But there are plenty of totora reeds, a sturdy building material from which the Indians build their homes and the platforms on which they float at the Lake’s edge, as well as some of their boats, which are strong enough to withstand the terrible storms that often whip the Lake.
