Caption Description
A Declaration on Food and Population, signed by some 500 intellectual and scientific leaders from 85 countries, was present to Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim at United Nations Headquarters today. Representing the signers at the presentation was a group of Nobel Prize winners, food scientists, authors and scholars. The group, which has constituted itself as a Committee on Food and Population, urged the Secretary-General to use the full influence of his office to assure that United Nations member governments take the necessary steps to create a system of world food security, including action to avoid outbreaks of famine. The presentation group, which has drawn up the Declaration, includes: Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, Nobel Prize winner and father of the Green Revolution; Chief S.O. Adebo of Nigeria; Dr. Gunnar Myrdal of Sweden; and Dr. B.R. Sen of India, a former Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The Declaration was read by Lord Snow, Physicist and writer; Former Parliamentary Secretary to Minister of Technology, United Kingdom. The appeal is being made in the course of the Sixth Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly which is now meeting to consider issues of Raw Material and Development.
