Tourism Development in Peru
Caption Description
For over two decades Peru has had a substantial tourism industry for which a principal asset is the wealth of historical monuments and archaeological sites from pre-Columbian cultures and the colonial era, especially in the Cuzco Zone, where the ruins of the city of Machu Picchu are located. In order to realize the full economic potential of these resources, the Government is developing a systematic plan for their protection and restoration as tourist attractions and for training personnel to carry out this work. Assisting this effort is the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as executing agent.
Partial view of the Machu Picchu site, where a tourist hotel has been built on a mountain adjacent to the ruins and a new road from the nearest railroad station in the Urubamba Valley 2,000 feet below. [Exact date unknown]
