Headline Mineral Surveys in Ethiopia
Caption Description Ethiopia is primarily an agricultural country and hitherto mineral production has played only a minor role in the economy. Minerals presently under exploitation include alluvial gold and platinum, manganese and some non-metallic mineral such as mica, potash, sulphur and construction materials. Besides these deposits there are other known occurrences which include gold, copper, iron ore, nickel and asbestos. It is recognized that modern exploratory techniques are needed in order to systematically exploit such deposits. The Government of Ethiopia, with the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with the United Nations as executing agency, is conducting a programme of selective and detailed mineral exploration in two general areas, Sidamo in the south and Wollega in the west, and is providing practical training to Ethiopia staff in the application of advanced techniques in locating buried mineral deposits.
Jihad Abakoyas (Ethiopia), Mining Engineer, operates an electromagnetic sounding device in a survey of a deposit of sulphide minerals in the Tullu Cape area of Wollega Province. [February 1970]
