Canada Ratifies International Cocoa Agreement
Caption Description
Canada today became the second country to ratify the International Cocoa Agreement, 1972. The Agreement was adopted in Geneva on 21 October 1972 at the U.N. Cocoa Conference, convened by the U.N. Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The objectives of the Agreement are mainly to prevent excessive fluctuation in the price of cocoa which affects adversely the long-term interest of both producers and consumers. An International Cocoa Council would be set up to supervise the operations of the provisions of the Agreement. The main features of the Agreement are an export quota system, a fixed price range for cocoa and a buffer stock mechanism.
