Delegates are seen depositing their ballots for the election of members of the Governing Council for Environmental Programmes. The General Assembly established a 58-member Governing Council for Environmental Programmes, elected according to a specified geographical formula, to promote international cooperation in this field and to provide general policy guidance for the direction and coordination of environmental programmes within the U.N. system.
