Meeting Jamaica’s Manpower Needs through Improved Education
Caption Description
At present in Jamaica there is a high rate of unemployment among the untrained, particularly school- leavers without vocational skills, coupled with a great demand for skilled labourers. The Government’s education development plan aims at supplying this growing labour market with middle-level manpower and increasing the number and quality of students trained to meet professional and sub-professional requirements. The World Bank (IBRD) is assisting this effort with a two-part loan totalling $23 million to help expand and improve secondary and primary education through the construction of some 90 schools and several vocational and teacher-training facilities. Part of the loan also assists the extension of instructional tele-vision programs within the school system.
