Malala Yousafzai, 2014 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, UN Messenger of Peace and co-founder of the Malala Fund, attends "Spotlight session 5: Advancing gender equality and girls’ and women’s empowerment in and through education” held on the third day of the Transforming Education Summit 2022.

The Transforming Education Summit was being convened in response to a global crisis in education – one of equity and inclusion, quality and relevance. Often slow and unseen, this crisis is having a devastating impact on the futures of children and youth worldwide. The Summit provides a unique opportunity to elevate education to the top of the global political agenda and to mobilize action, ambition, solidarity and solutions to recover pandemic-related learning losses and sow the seeds to transform education in a rapidly changing world.

Headline Meeting Jamaica’s Manpower Needs through Improved Education
Caption Description At present in Jamaica there is a high rate of unemployment among the untrained, particularly school- leavers without vocational skills, coupled with a great demand for skilled labourers. The Government’s education development plan aims at supplying this growing labour market with middle-level manpower and increasing the number and quality of students trained to meet professional and sub-professional requirements. The World Bank (IBRD) is assisting this effort with a two-part loan totalling $23 million to help expand and improve secondary and primary education through the construction of some 90 schools and several vocational and teacher-training facilities. Part of the loan also assists the extension of instructional tele-vision programs within the school system.
