Caption Description
East Pakistan’s inland waterways system, consisting of some 4,500 miles of navigable channels connecting 1,400 river stations and ports, is the chief and most economical means of transport in the country. The East Pakistan Water Transport Authority (EPIWTA) in Narayanganj, established in 1958, is currently engaged in a comprehensive programme to improve waterways and navigable channels, modernize navigation aids, develop inland river ports and landing stations and upgrade mechanized inland craft. East Pakistan has received credits for development of inland waterways and Ports from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and its affiliate, the International Development Association (IDA). The International Labour Organization (ILO) as Executing Agency for the UN Development Programme (UNDP) is assisting the Narayanganj Marine Diesel Training Centre in training personnel qualified in installation, operation, maintenance and repair of diesel engines and craft.
