Farming for Development: Plant Breeding Research
Caption Description
For some time to come the poorer countries of the world will have to rely on agriculture to raise their living standards and supply the capital they need to create industries. Agricultural production must therefore be increased. This requires tractors, fertilizers, new and better seeds, vast irrigation schemes, land reforms.
Dr. Knut Mikaelsen (right), Food and Agriculture Organization and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expert, and assistant examining a crop of experimental wheat. One of the main objectives of plant breeding research at the laboratory of the IAEA at Seibersdorf near Vienna, is to improve and standardize methods of mutation induction by radiation treatment of seeds. This work is important to the development of new crop strains to help meet the food needs of the increasing population of the world. [No exact date]
