Modernisation and Expansion of the Port of Singapore
Caption Description
The Government of Singapore, through its Economic Development Board and with the assistance of the United Nations and several of the related agencies under the UN Development Programme (UNDP), has embarked on an intensive and rapid industrialization programme. Due to this increased economic activity there has been a general increase in shipping activity and the number and tonnage of vessels entering and leaving the port this year surpassed all previous records. The Government, with financial assistance from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), has undertaken a comprehensive plan of modernisation and port expansion through extensive land reclamation to accommodate the growing demands on the present facilities.
A general view of the Port of Singapore, the fifth largest port in the world and one of the principal entrepôt and commercial centres of South East Asia.
