Secretary-General António Guterres visited Antarctica to see the deadly impact of the climate crisis. While in Antarctica the Secretary-General saw the Collins and Nelson Glaciers, as well as the Kopaitic Island, which is home to penguins and other species which are being impacted by climate change.

Famine has been declared in two regions of southern Somalia – southern Bakool and Lower Shabelle. The United Nations indicates that 3.7 million people across the country, that’s nearly half of the Somali population, are now in crisis and in urgent need of assistance. An estimated 2.8 million of those are in the south.

A woman in El Fasher, North Darfur, uses a Water Roller for easily and efficiently carrying water. With its large drum capacity (usually 75 litres), the device frees women and children from having to spend a large portion of every day dedicated to collecting water for their households. The African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) has distributed some 3,000 such rollers across Darfur.
In defiance of numerous UN decisions the South African Government continues to refuse to withdraw from Namibia It has imposed its policy of apartheid and will not allow the UN Council for Namibia to take over and guide the territory towards independence. The UN Council for Namibia insists that genuine independence is only possible under UN auspices.

18,000 more people reportedly recently arrived in Nyal payam (county) in search of safety and security due to the conflict between the South Sudan government and the armed opposition forces. Fighting resumed last August despite a signed peace accord, forcing South Sudanese to flee in search of safety, assistance, and protection, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Together, the World Food Programme (WFP) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) provide assistance with food and nutrition, as well as childhood education.
