Headline
Andean Indian Programme in Colombia
Caption Description
The Andean Indian programme, designed to raise the living standards of the indigenous populations of the Altiplano region and integrate them into the economic and social life of their respective countries, was extended in 1960 to include Colombia and portions of Chile and Argentina, in addition to Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru, where the project had already been underway since 1953. Under the leadership of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), other UN agencies, such as the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), and the World Health Organisation (WHO), are assisting the Governments concerned by providing advisory services for the programme.
Chief ILO adviser Dr. Gonzalo Pesantez (Ecuador) addresses the 108 governors and secretaries representing 80,000 Indians of 54 districts in the Cauca Region, who are attending a training course in community development techniques given by the ILO in Popayan. [May 1966]
