Cabo Verde’s development projects supported by the United Nations are helping to transform the agricultural sector of Santo Antão, the westernmost island of Cabo Verde. Since 1997, the development projects have helped moving water to irrigate and created useable farmland in an arid climate which previously was unusable for farming. The projects have also focused on turning land into more sustainable farming situation and teaching residents to learn to market better product such as switching from sugar cane to banana and other more sustainable products.

A participant of a townhall meeting - held as part of the sixty-third session of the Commission on the Status of Women - greets a UN staff member prior to the beginning of the townhall.
The townhall, moderated by Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), served as an opportunity for civil society representatives to engage with Secretary-General António Guterres and his senior leadership on topics pertaining to gender equality and the work of the UN.
Maryam Bular Hasan, Poet, shares a poem at the Summit of the Future Action Day Two session titled “Dismantling patriarchal power structures”. Action Day 2, which coincides with the International Day of Peace, focuses on three priority themes: A Digital Future for All; A Peaceful Future for All; and A Sustainable Future for All.

The Summit offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity for change. It will pave the way to a better tomorrow, one that we can only shape together. In support of this vision and these objectives, the Secretary-General of the United Nations convened the Summit of the Future Action Days on 20 and 21 September 2024 to generate additional opportunities for the engagement of all actors.

Headline The Voluntary Fund for the United Nations Decade for Women
Caption Description Crippled by poverty, lack of education and training opportunities, millions of women across the world are locked into a life-style of unskilled, under-productive and unpaid labour. The Voluntary Fund for the United Nations Decade for Women, established following International Women's Year in 1975, supports projects in developing countries which help rural and poor urban women acquire the skills and resources they need to realize their potential. Financed by governments, public and private organizations, by 1981, the Fund had initiated 238 projects in Asia, the Pacific, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. But fresh resources are vital to enable the Fund to develop its programme and pinpoint new areas of need.
