AIDS, the Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome, is the late stage of infection caused by a virus, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Globally an estimated 34 million people are now living with HIV/AIDS. Of this number, 14 million are women and 1.2 are children under fourteen years of age.

Headline UNMISS Commemorates World Aids Day 
Caption Description Staff at the United Nations Mission in south Sudan (UNMISS) lit candles at a vigil in remembrance of those who have died or suffer from HIV, as part of events held to commemorate World Aids Day in South Sudan.  During the day, free testing and counselling was extended to a cross section of United Nations staff. Similar testing and counselling took place at a different event organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Ministry of Health.
