The General Assembly today elected five new non-permanent members of the Security Council to serve for the period of 1 January 2023 - 31 December 2024. The election was uncontested, as five member states (Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland) were running for the five available seats. Japan, Ecuador and Malta have served on the Council previously, while Mozambique and Switzerland have never served on the Council.
