Caption Description
Secretary-General António Guterres (centre right) greets Sir Tipene O'Regan, a kaumatua of Ngai Tahu, at an informal discussion on climate change and agriculture hosted by Ngai Tahu (a large Maori tribe on the South Island) and the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre.
At left is Damien O’Connor, Minister of Agriculture, and second from left is Arihia Bennett MNZM, the CEO of Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu.
Mr. Guterres traveled to the South Pacific to spotlight the issue of climate change ahead of the Climate Action Summit to be convened in September 2019 in New York. The trip took him to New Zealand, Fiji, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. In each country, Mr. Guterres met with government leaders, civil society representatives and youth groups, to hear from those already impacted by climate change and who are also successfully engaging in meaningful climate action.
