The Aarey Milk Colony - India's Largest Milk Plant
Caption Description
The Aarey Milk Colony, 20 miles out of Bombay, supplies milk to some 1 1/2 million people in Bombay - half of its total population. The colony consists of 30 modern dairy units with 21,000 head of milch buffaloes on its 3,500 acres. The Government of India owns the land on which the cattle graze and are tended, but individuals own the cattle and they sell the milk to the Government on a cost-plus-profit basis. Food and Agriculture Organization technical assistance experts have helped the Indian Government in the development of the Aarey farm colony, while United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has provided a pasteurisation plant and equipment for drying milk.
The Village of Davol, 20 miles from Anand, participates in the Kaira District Co-operative Producers Union. Davol has 1000 buffaloes, most of the families own one to two buffaloes and two to three acres of land. [Exact date unknown]
