The flags outside UN Headquarters are raised manually by UN Security Officers every weekday morning at approximately 8 am and lowered every weekday at around 4 pm, except in cases of bad weather. The 193 Member States of the United Nations are each assigned a flagpole, organized in English alphabetical order from north to south at UN Headquarters. In 2015, its non-member observer States (Holy See and the State of Palestine) got assigned their own flagpoles. On weekends, only the UN flag is raised. However, during UN General Assembly high-level week held in September each year, the flags of the UN and the world remain flying around the clock.

Headline Sculpture Unveiled Honours Dag Hammarskjöld
Caption Description A 21-foot-high abstract sculpture, entitled ""Single Form"" and dedicated to the memory of Dag Hammarskjöld, was unveiled at United Nations Headquarters this afternoon during a ceremony presided over by United Nations Secretary-General U Thant. The sculpture, mounted on a granite base at the southern edge of the circular basin facing the 38-story Secretariat building, was executed by Barbara Hepworth, a British sculptress. It is a gift of Jacob Blaustein, former U.S. delegate to the United Nations and friend of the late Secretary-General.
The abstract sculpture, ""Single Form"" is seen against the background of the Dag Hammerskjold Memorial Library at United Nations Headquarters.
