The General Assembly voted late today to authorize the United Nations to carry out the tasks entrusted to it in the Agreement between Indonesia and the Netherlands concerning West New Guinea (West Irian).

The General Assembly this afternoon unanimously appointed Ambassador U Thant as Acting Secretary-General of the United Nations for a term of office extending until 10 April 1963. The action of the Assembly was taken on a draft resolution sponsored by Ceylon, Liberia and the United Arab Republic. The result of the secret ballot was 103 in favour to none against, with no abstentions.
The installation ceremony took place on the dais of the Assembly Hall shortly after the result of the voting was announced. Representatives gave the appointee a standing ovation as he proceeded to the dais to take the oath of office. Here, U Thant (left) is seen just before he was sworn-in by General Assembly President Mongi Slim (right), of Tunisia. On the dais with them are the Vice-Presidents (13) of the Assembly, the Chairmen of the Assembly’s Seven Main Committees and the Presidents of the three Councils.

A view of the sun rising behind Long Island City and the sculpture, "Good Defeats Evil", by Zurab Tsereteli, in the north garden area of UN Headquarters. The sculpture depicts St. George slaying the dragon. The Dragon here is made from actual parts of a Soviet SS-20 and an American Pershing II nuclear missiles, and represents the specter of nuclear war. The sculpture was presented to the UN by the Soviet Union in 1990 and commemorates the dismantling of the missiles under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty signed 8 December, 1987 by Presidents Ronald Reagan of the United States and Mikhail Gorbachev of the Soviet Union.

Then Secretary-General Kofi Annan said about the sculpture in 1999, “It has enriched the consciousness of humanity with a powerful symbol that encapsulates, in a few simple curves, the greatest prayer of man; that which asks not for victory, but for peace.”

Headline Staff Memorial to Dag Hammarskjold and 15 Who Died with Him
Caption Description A stained glass panel by the French artist Marc Chagall will be unveiled at United Nations Headquarters on 17 September as a memorial to former Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjld and the 15 others who died with him in 1961 in a plane crash at Ndola, Northern Rhodesia. The ceremony will mark the third anniversary of the accident. The memorial will be unveiled by Secretary-General U Thant in the south-eastern section of the lobby of the Secretariat building, facing the East River. Creation of the memorial has been made possible by United Nations staff members at Headquarters and abroad, who to date have donated $17,000 in response to an appeal launched soon after Mr. Hammarskjold's death by a committee of the United Nations Staff Council. The panel, which is about 15 feet wide and 12 feet high, depicts conceptions of the artist on the themes of peace and man.
