Chagall Stained Glass Panel Unveiled as Staff Memorial to Dag Hammarskjöld and Those Who Died with Him
Caption Description
A stained glass panel by Marc Chagall, the French artist, was unveiled this afternoon by Secretary-General U Thant at United Nations Headquarters as a memorial to Dag Hammarskjöld, the late Secretary-General, and 15 others who died with him in a plane crash in Northern Rhodesia three years ago today. The memorial was made possible by donations of United Nations staff members throughout the world in response to an appeal launched by the Staff Memorial Committee. The memorial is in the south-eastern section of the lobby of the Secretariat building, facing the East River. It is about 15 feet wide and 12 feet high and depicts, in symbolic forms and designs, man's yearning for peace.
