Headline Chagall Stained Glass Panel Unveiled as Staff Memorial to Dag Hammarskjöld and Those Who Died with Him
Caption Description A stained glass panel by Marc Chagall, the French artist, was unveiled this afternoon by Secretary-General U Thant at United Nations Headquarters as a memorial to Dag Hammarskjöld, the late Secretary-General, and 15 others who died with him in a plane crash in Northern Rhodesia three years ago today. The memorial was made possible by donations of United Nations staff members throughout the world in response to an appeal launched by the Staff Memorial Committee. The memorial is in the south-eastern section of the lobby of the Secretariat building, facing the East River. It is about 15 feet wide and 12 feet high and depicts, in symbolic forms and designs, man's yearning for peace.

Secretary-General U Thant during his address to guests and United Nations staff members. Attending the ceremony were (left to right, front row): Mr. C.V. Narasimhan, Under-Secretary for General Assembly Affairs and Chef of Cabinet; Mr. Brian Urquhart, Principal Officer in the Offices of the Under-Secretaries for Special Political Affairs; Mr. Andrew Cordier, President of the U.S. Committee of the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation; and Mr. Roger Seydoux, Permanent Representatives of France to the United Nations. Mr. Sverker C. Åström, Permanent Representative of Sweden to the United Nations; Mr. Basile Yakovlev, Chairman of the UN Staff Committee; Madame Marc Chagall and Mr. Marc Chagall, the artist.
