Transportation in the Philippines
Caption Description
The Philippines consists of 7,100 islands with an area of 115,758 square miles. Eleven of the islands comprise the bulk of the area. They are Luzon, Mindanao, Samar, Negros, Palawan, Panay, Mindoro, Leyte, Cebu, Bohol and Masbate. The islands are mountainous, harbouring some of the volcanoes which are to be found in a great chain far to the north and south. The ruggedness of the mountains is, however, in marked contrast to the rich slopes and valleys. More than 70% of the 29 million people who live in the Philippines take advantage of the fertile soil to earn their living, and over half of the national income of the country is derived from agriculture.
