Malaria Eradication in El Salvador
Caption Description
A new insecticide is now being used in the fight against the mosquito in El Salvador. The anopheles mosquito - carrier of malaria and the scourge of the tropics - has developed a strong resistance to DDT, once the most effective weapon in its desdestruction. The Government of El Salvador, aided by the World Health Organization (WHO), has equipped light planes with the new insecticide to spray swamps and areas where mosquitoes breed. Public health workers spray houses systematically and take other precautions to eliminate the insects. WHO has set 1968 as the target date for the worldwide eradication of malaria and the intensive work now being carried out in El Salvador is just one part of this campaign.
Pilot David Saravia (El Salvador) reports to WHO expert, Azaory Mattei (Brazil) on his spraying flight. [No exact date]
