Headline
Inland Waterways of Pakistan to be Modernized
Caption Description
In East Pakistan, the chief and most economical means of transportation are the inland waterways. The Government of Pakistan through the Inland Water Transport Authority (ITWA) has launched a scheme to moderate the 2,800 miles of navigable waterways. With a $2 million development credit extended by the International Development Association (IDA), an affiliate of the World Bank, the IWTA will install cargo and passenger facilities at five main inland river ports, two of which serve the Greater Dacca area, the most important commercial centre in East Pakistan. It will also provide storage facilities and supervise inland water transport operations. At present, inland water transport operates under difficult conditions and at relatively high cost.
