Chinju Rebuilding on First Anniversary of Korean Aggression
Caption Description
On 24 September 1950, when the United Nations Forces recaptured Chinju, 60 per cent of the city and its suburbs were destroyed, some 60,000 of its residents were homeless. Today, on the first anniversary of the aggression in Korea, Chinju is rebuilding itself rapidly and, once again, its people look ahead to better times.
Here, a new house is being constructed; this picture shows the plastering of the walls. Despite material shortages and the high cost of construction while the war goes on, much of the market has been rebuilt and some 700 houses, built of mud and bamboo and topped by tile roofs, have gone up.
