Colonel M. K. Unni Nayar, Alternate Representative of India on the United Nations Commission on Korea, who lost his life when a UN vehicle struck a landmine in the combat area. Colonel Near was 38 years old. Before joining UNCOK, he had held the post of Public Relations Officer with the Indian Embassy in Washington. Born in Malabar, he graduated from Madras Christian College. After a distinguished journalistic career in India, he joined the Indian Army, and served during World War II in Burma, Egypt, Sicily, Italy, and Malaya. He was wounded in the Burma campaign while serving under General Wingate. Colonel Nayar leaves a wife and infant child.
