Headline
Fisheries Development in Malaysia
Caption Description
For many years the Giant Malaysian Fresh Water Prawn has been esteemed by gourmets throughout Asia as a delicious and nutritious food, but has defied attempts at artificial breeding. Now, after four years, the Malaysian Fisheries Department, with the assistance of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has learned enough about the prawn to make widespread cultivation possible, providing an additional source of both nutrition and income for Malaysians. Experiments with other fish are being conducted in attempts to produce better quality and larger quantities.
A ten-month old prawn is observed by FAO Fisheries Expert Mr. Shao-Wen Ling (China), left, who has been aiding experiments to produce fresh water prawns in nurseries and to find ways of making them compatible with other fish in ponds. The final objective of the experiments is to reduce the mortality of young prawns.
