In response to rising world concern about the conditions of man’s habitat, representatives of some 130 nations converged on Stockholm, Sweden, this month in an unprecedented meeting to seek ways to translate that concern into a global attack on the common perils menacing the environment. The two-week UN Conference on the Human Environment (5-6 June) has been called by the General Assembly with the aim of producing an international political consensus on ways of preserving and improving the environment for this and future generations.
A general view of the Second Committee (Development and Environment) as it met on 7 June. At this meeting the Committee approved a recommendation relating to trade barriers resulting from environmental policies. It would have the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the U.N. Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and other international bodies consider undertaking to monitor, assess and regularly report emergence of tariff and non-tariff barriers to trade as a result of environmental policies.
