A special commemorative meeting of the General Assembly to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was held in the Trusteeship Council chamber at Headquarters today. On this occasion, the Assembly also launched the Decade for Action to Combat Racism and Racial Discrimination. During the meeting, the President of the Assembly, Leopoldo Benites (Ecuador) awarded six United Nations prizes (two of them posthumously) for outstanding achievements in the field of human rights. Prior to the presentation, statements were made by Mr. Benites, Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim, and other officials.
Mr. Waldheim is seen presenting one of the prizes to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, Prime Minister of Mauritius.
