Headline Committee on World Disarmament Conference Considers Its Organization of Work
Caption Description The Ad Hoc Committee on the World Disarmament Conference resumed its work this morning by considering its organization of work, agreeing to continue its general debate at its meetings scheduled for 3 and 4 April, and hearing statements by the representatives of the Soviet Union and Hungary. The Committee was set up by the General Assembly in 1973 to examine all the views and suggestions expressed by governments on the convening of a World Disarmament Conference and related problems, including conditions for the realization of such a conference. Forty non-nuclear-weapon states were designated as its members. The states possessing nuclear weapons were invited by the Assembly to co-operate or maintain contact with the Committee, it being understood that they would enjoy the same rights as the designated members of the Committee. Under this latter provision, representatives of France, the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom have participated in meetings of the Committee, along with the designated members. In addition, the Chairman has maintained contact with the other states possessing nuclear weapons, China and the United States.
