Gift of Soviet Union to United Nations
Caption Description
The bronze sculpture "Let Us Beat Swords into Plowshares", by Soviet sculptor Evgeny Vuchetich, located in the North garden, was presented to the United Nations on 4 December 1959. It represents the figure of a man holding a hammer in one hand and, in the other, a sword which he is making into a ploughshare, symbolizing man's desire to put an end to war and convert the means of destruction into creative tools for the benefit of all mankind. This work received the highest award - the ""Grand Prix"" diploma at the Brussels World Exhibition of 1958. [April 1970]
