Headline India Receives World Bank Loan for Production of High-Yielding Foodgrain Seeds
Caption Description The Government of India in its "Green Revolution", since 1965 has given high priority to increasing agricultural production through investment in modern inputs such as fertilizer, high-yielding seed, better waste use and improved credit institutions. The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) has made a $13 million loan to India to increase agricultural production through a project to grow seeds of high-yielding varieties of food grains.  The seeds will be grown on private farms in the Tarai area, a fertile belt about 60 miles wide and 12 miles long, lying between the foothills of the Himalayas and the open plains, in the State of Uttar Pradesh.  The Tarai Development Corp., and the Uttar Pradesh University, will be responsible for seed marketing and other services to farmers.  The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), participated in the preparation and appraisal of the project under the Bank/FAO Cooperative Program.

At the experimental farm of the Uttar Pradesh Agricultural University at Pantnagar, 200 miles north east of the Delhi, a tractor prepares seed beds and workers carve the soil to define the boundary between the wheat and barley crops. [June 1969]
