Micronesia - Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands
Caption Description
The Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which became a United Nations Trusteeship in 1947 under US administration, consists of more than 2,000 islands and atolls having a combined land area of 700 square miles and spread over an ocean area of 3 million square miles in the western Pacific, north of the Equator. These islands and atolls, collectively known as Micronesia, form three major archipelagos -- the Marianas, the Carolines and the Marshalls. Guam, the largest island in the Marianas, is not part of the Trust Territory. For administrative purposes the Territory is divided into six districts, each having a legislative body: Palau, Yap, Truk, Ponape (within the Carolines), the Marshall Islands and the Mariana Islands. The 92,000 people of the Territory are collectively served by the Congress of Micronesia which is a bicameral legislature consisting of the General Assembly and House of Delegates. The Yap District is composed of four major islands about 450 miles southwest of Guam. Subsistence agriculture provides practically all essential food for the Yapese. Principle exports are copra and trochus shell.
